How to Join Cast Iron Gutters to PVC Gutters
When it comes to gutter systems, cast iron gutters have long been a popular choice for their durability and classic appearance. However, as technology and materials have evolved, many homeowners now prefer PVC gutters, which are more cost-effective and easier to install.
If you're looking to combine the charm of cast iron gutters with the practicality of PVC, utilizing a gutter adaptor can be the perfect solution. In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the process of seamlessly joining cast iron gutters to PVC gutters using a gutter adaptor.
BEFORE YOU START
Understanding the Gutter Adaptor
A gutter adaptor is a specially designed fitting that allows you to connect different types of gutters, such as cast iron and PVC. It bridges the gap between the two materials, ensuring a secure and leak-free joint. Read our guide to find out which gutter adaptor you need.
Assessing Compatibility
Before the installation, it's crucial to ensure that the cast iron and PVC gutters are compatible with the chosen gutter adaptor. Ensure that the dimensions and profiles of both gutters match the requirements of the adaptor to facilitate a smooth connection.

JOIN CAST IRON GUTTERS TO PVC GUTTERS
1. Cutting the PVC Gutter
First, measure the length where the cast iron and PVC gutters will be connected, then cut to the appropriate size using a hacksaw or fine tooth wood saw. Make clean, straight cuts to ensure a proper fit with the gutter adaptor.
2. Preparing the PVC Gutters
Next, use sandpaper or a file to smooth the edges of the PVC gutters. This step is essential to create a clean surface for a secure bond with the gutter adaptor.
3. Cutting & Drilling the Cast Iron Gutter
Existing Cast Iron Gutters can be cut using an angle grinder or reciprocating saw fitted with an appropriate diamond blade. Cut edges should be deburred before being repainted with touch-up paint.
Drilling (if needed) should be done with an appropriate drill bit. The drill hole should be deburred and then repainted with touch-up paint.
4. Installing the Gutter Adaptor into the Cast Iron Gutter
Apply 2 x 6mm beads of low modulus sealant into the cut end of the gutter, place the Gutter Adapter onto the sealant and secure with the Strap (RD5) or Nut & Bolt supply (RD3 & RD4).
Ensure that it fits snugly and securely. The gutter adaptor acts as a bridge between the two gutter materials, facilitating a seamless transition.
5. Connecting the PVC Gutter
Carefully insert the prepared end of the PVC gutter into the gutter adaptor on the cast iron gutter. Ensure a proper fit and alignment. Silicone Lubricant is recommended on the Rubber seal.
6. Sealing the Connection
To provide an extra layer of protection against leaks, apply silicone sealant along the joint between the cast iron and PVC gutters. Smooth the sealant with a putty knife for a neat finish.
7. Testing the Joint
Allow sufficient time for the silicone sealant to cure completely. Once cured, test the joint by running water through the gutters to ensure there are no leaks or weak spots.
