Wood Design Cladding FAQs

Looking for more info about our wood design cladding from Durasid? Not to worry – we have answers to all of the most frequently asked questions here!

Is PVC cladding safe?

In comparison to alternative cladding options such as timber, PVC cladding is the safest choice. Timber is far more flammable than PVC and therefore contributes to the spread of fire more. In the event of a fire, the PVC material will char and melt away rather than causing fast spread of flames.

Is Durasid weatherboard cladding fireproof?

That being said, Durasid external cladding is not totally fireproof. It has been tested to NBN EN 13501-1 standard and carries a fire rating of D s3 d2 in all colours. This means that, overall, it gives only a medium contribution to fire.

To learn more about fire ratings, you can click here to read our helpful guides & tips article that outlines the basics of fire ratings.

Is PVC cladding waterproof?

Our rigid foam cladding from Durasid is completely waterproof – no moisture will be absorbed into the core of the board. This will prevent the boards from rotting and degrading in quality and will prolong the life of the cladding installation.

Can you paint PVC cladding?

Because Durasid’s wood design cladding is supplied in a wide range of colours, it doesn’t need to be painted – if you were to paint it, you’d cover up the beautiful woodgrain pattern! With the correct maintenance, the original colour of the boards will not deteriorate over time, so painting the boards is not necessary.

However, if you’re looking to change things up but don’t want to install new cladding, then you can paint the boards. Simply sand down the surface, remove any leftover dust, prime, and paint the boards with your chosen colour. Make sure you’re using paint that’s suitable for external installations, so that it lasts for a long time!

How much PVC cladding do I need?

To calculate how much wood design cladding you need, you can click here to use Durasid’s online cladding calculator.

If you’d rather go about it the old-fashioned way, simply follow these steps:

  1. Work out the total area that you want to cover in m2.
  2. Divide this number by the width of the cladding boards. This is where things can get tricky, as cladding boards tend to have a slight overlap – so make sure to account for the overlap by taking away the length of the overlap from the width of the board.
    • For example, if the boards have a width of 200mm, but there is an overlap of 15mm, then the width figure to divide by would actually be 185mm.
    • Top tip – make sure you’re always using the same unit of measurement when doing these calculations!
  3. Finally, all you have to do is take the resulting number from step 2 and divide it by the length of the cladding boards. This will tell you how many boards you need!
    1. Top tip – if your result isn’t a whole number, always round it up! You don’t want to be left with a small area of uncovered walling.

And there you have it! A quick and (hopefully) easy way to calculate the required number of cladding boards for your project.
